We are good with frozen turkey ourselves, just bought at Bi-Lo last night for a decent price.
If you're crafty and willing to experiment, you can dress up a turkey if cooking at home. Hubby and I are no experts, but he is pretty good in the kitchen. Last year, we bagged up a turkey with some chicken broth, olive oil, herbs, sliced oranges and sliced apples. So, put the turkey in a cooking bag, stuffed with apples and oranges, added liquids and herbs, then more sliced apples and oranges around the outside. It turned out incredibly good, and was good and moist.
Thanks guys. Will check out Earth Fare and Fresh Market this weekend. I have a meat thermometer so I will just keep checking on that regularly to make sure we dont under/over cook it.
We are all pretty laid back so even if it turns out to be a disaster we would all be fine with pizza as a backup plan.
We buy a fresh Turkey breast from the Fresh Market on Providence Road. We reserve it a couple of weeks out. Since we usually have lots of dark meat left over, it make more sense for us to just get the breast. Then, there are those who like the dark meat, so reserve a whole fresh Turkey that you can pick up the day before Thanksgiving.
Use a meat thermometer and cook to 165 degree's,basting occasionally, removefrom oven and cover with foil, let sit for 15 minutes before serving. We prefer stuffing in separate dish.
We use the charbroil oil less turkey fryer. It runs on propane and the turkey is as good (if not better than deep fried). We have used it more than our standard barbeque this past summer.
I always get the fresh bird from Earthfare. They have a regular and organic option. I'm a big Meathouse fan, but their fresh option is in the high $4.00/lb range which is a bit spendy for me

I do indulge on some spendy items from time to time, but $4/lb turkey is absolutely ridiculous, only a sucker would pay that.
