Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

Last time I checked, July 4th was only one day and this year it was Sunday. Why are so many retailers and businesses closed today?
Why am I still listening to fireworks being set off outside my office window on Monday afternoon?

The rule of thumb is that when a holiday falls on Saturday, Friday is the business holiday. If it's on Sunday, then Monday is the holiday.

That said, some people didn't get the memo, & chose Saturday.

If 3 days of 4th of July is bothering you, consider yourself lucky to be in Charlotte. In Philly it goes on for 11 days. Welcome America

Well, when you're seeing firecrackers in the produce section of the Harris Teeter, you brace yourself for several days of boom boom.

11 day celebration?! I know where I'm going next year for the 4th! I love fairs and fireworks, so when I moved here I was disappointed that the 4th was only celebrated on the 4th. In St Louis it was a 3 day affair, and in San Francisco there were towns all around the Bay area that had things going on the 3rd and 4th. I think at least when its on a weekend like it was this year its okay to have things going on all weekend, especially with Monday being a technical Federal Holiday. Its Independence day, why not celebrate?!

OK, I'm happy it works for you! I just thought it would make the OP feel better about the 3 days.

Whatever floats your boat. I was disappointed that I went to some retail stores to get home improvements done and they were closed on Monday. I am still hearing fireworks go off in my neighborhood.

If it hits 11 days, it may be some transplants from Philly.
