There's a book that was written by one of the Observer reporters on this years ago. It was a highly entertaining read.

Found it! Heist!, by Jeff Diamant.

I remember seeing this on the news.

After I moved in this was on the news Lincoln Times-News : Lincoln County's Home Newspaper (http://www.lincolntimesnews.com/current.asp?Story=22180&Sect=20&Y=2010&M=5&D=19 - broken link)

Pookie said he went to high school with her
back to this robbery

As of 2010, the three largest cash robberies ever committed on American soil were all carried out in 1997. In all three robberies, the target was an armored car or the storage facility of an armored car firm.
This October 1997 Loomis Fargo Bank robbery is similar in size to the unrelated March 1997 Loomis Fargo armored car robbery by Philip N. Johnson ($18.8 million) and the September 1997 Dunbar Armored robbery ($18.9 million - currently considered the "largest cash robbery" in U.S. history).

Ohmygosh, so funny you would post this - I was just thinking about it the other day when I was in Cramerton!

Those crocks were so stupid that I'm embarrassed for them! Guess they must be out of jail by now?

I love what one official said about the whole thing ,

"Maybe the lesson we learn from this," says Otis Meacham, deputy state banking commissioner, "is that you just don't want to tempt people beyond their tolerance."

My Gaston native friends say they still live in the area. According local folklore the families are still living off some of hidden money.

Here's a really long but great article from the Charlotte Observer(1998)
