This is the fourth bank robbery this week in the Charlotte area, but the first in which gunfire was exchanged. The First Citizens Bank in Myers Park was robbed Thursday afternoon, while the BB&T was robbed in southwest Charlotte on Wednesday afternoon.
A Wells Fargo bank in the northeast part of the city near UNC Charlotte was robbed on Tuesday afternoon as well.
I wouldn't base any assumptions on the safety of Charlotte on bank robberies alone. The best estimate is that more than 6,000 occur per year - and not all are reported to the FBI. As you can see, this was at least the 4th in a week's time but the only one that garnered media attention because shots were fired. Otherwise, you wouldn't know anything about this one, or the other three that preceded it.
Most tellers can attest that it is a fairly common occurrence and they are advised to hand over the money without creating a scene, so as not to alarm other customers. Most robber's take is relatively small.
Bank robberies are more common in the early morning hours, on Fridays and in the South.
I believe Charlotte remains a relatively safe place. However, one might consider conducting all of one's banking transactions from the comfort of home, regardless of where you live.

Not reported to the FBI? It is a federal crime.....
Per the FBI, not all bank robberies are reported to them thus 6,000/year is the best estimate they can provide. I am, however, unsure what year that number was reported.
