Ok, this shows I haven't visited for a while. I would normally post this in the pics sticky, but it's also about the mall.
One of the neatest things about the mall was the waterfall in the central atrium area. Maybe to us locals back when it was built it became kind of ho-hum after a while, but after living many more years and going to many more malls, I realized that few malls have any kind of water features in their atrium area, much less one as elaborate as the one at Town Center.
Here's a blast of the past - I took this photo in 1985, two years after the mall opened (it's a scan of an old negative I just found):
So tonight, I get online in Flickr, and saw some new pics someone had posted on a visit to Charleston. Look at the mall pics, and POOF - NO WATERFALL! Wow. They cut the whole top part of it off and just left the pool at the bottom. When did this happen?
From what I've heard, the place hasn't been renovated at all since it actually opened. Did they start, and this was the result, or for some other reason did they just chop it off and stop there, etc? Ugh. Hate to see that go.
If I recall correctly they did that several years ago as a means to expand the center court area for a Starbucks kiosk. I was quite upset the waterfall was taken out as it was a staple of the mall when I was growing up. The mall was THE place to see and be seen when I was in my junior high days..we used to spend hours at the arcade and just walk around the place waiting for a movie to start at Park Place Cinemas.
I personally think the store selection has declined over the past few years at Town Center although it is still among the best in West Virginia. The only reason I still pay a visit to that place is to eat at Tidewater. I also enjoyed Gratzi (former Olive Garden spot) but alas it closed due to poor customer reception.
They destroyed the waterfall to make room for a Starbucks kiosk?
Where's mall management? I have something for them... argh!

my boyfriend took the waterfall out and no the reason was not to make starbucks kiosk bigger but because the noise the waterfall made it was very loud and annoying to the people who worked around it so the mall had it removed also the mall has been renovated many times the whole 3rd floor was about 3 years ago my boyfriend also built the senior center on the 3rd floor along with 91 stores and he has remodled countless other stores in the mall every store in the mall gets renovated every 3 years as part of their contract

I'm ashamed of the workers, then.
Geesh, I know people who work in malls in my area - none of them have water features. They'd BEG to hear water... even loud water... instead of piped in hall music and kids throwing fits in the entrances all day. lol
I worked at the Finish Line on the 2nd floor one year in college. I liked the sound of the waterfall, but i'm sure it was problematic for the stores located right beside the fall. Especially the ones on the first floor near the base of it.
The Town Center now has a little more space at center court if they had an event and wanted to have it in the center ring near Starbucks.
For some reason, these sorts of malls are on the decline everywhere. The trend seems to be going to elaborate strip malls more like those from before the enclosed mall concept came into being. The malls last 20-30 years and fall into disuse/disrepair in what seems to be a cycle.
Picture i took last night, you can see a small pool of water, and a tiny step falls. It's much more scerene now.
That's a really good pic I like the mall better without the waterfall i enjoy it more because it's quiet you can sit at starbucks and sip coffee and not feel like there's a river near by lol

I think this is happening in alot of malls throughout the USA. The other thing I thought of are these mega-outdoor outlets, similar to the one in Leesburg, but there are some that are bigger. I was in San Marcos, TX last year and there's is HUGE.
