The paved walking/biking path that runs along the Kanawha River is going to be extended to the Charleston Civic Center, and possibly all the way to Coonskin Park. The trail, which runs from Danial Boone Park to the mouth of the Elk River, would turn up the Elk and pass under 3 bridges and meet the Civic Center's back entrance. The City hopes to connect the city together with its trail system. The trail would connect Danial Boone Park, The Capitol Complex, Historic East End, Downtown, Haddad Riverfront Park and now the Civic Center. This trail will go great with the new Marriot Courtyard and the being remodeled Holiday Inn Express. This is more great news for our beautiful city.
Lets hope the city also increases the police patrols for the area along the Elk River. On the surface, walking or running or whatever under those bridges to the back of the Civic Center would be risky considering the area is outta sight of the general public.

Very True. It would be nice to see the trail used enough to attract cops on bikes that could patrol the trail.
That's what we have in Morgantown... cops on bikes, and it works well. We have had no problems with our extensive trail system. I see that as a highly positive development for Charleston.

We have lots bike cops, but they don't patrol the trail system like they should. I see them mostly around the capitol complex, and village district, but never along the river.

When i used to run along the Boulevard trail i would see a bike cop every so often.
The odds of a policeman (or woman) who just happens to be on their bike near you when a crime is committed is pretty slim (and the bad guys know this). The better bet would be if they install police call boxes for the public, as well as a couple of well-place security cameras and signs to let everyone know the less visible places are monitored. Works much better than a cop riding by quickly on a bike once every hour.
And extending trails is always a good thing as studies have shown that a certain percentage of people will walk more often if there's more scenic changes on a longer trail, than if they have shorter trails that offer the same view.
