The South Carolina Department of Education just released the 2008 "State Report Cards" today. With all the criticism we read about how poor Charleston County schools are, it is interesting to note that there are notable exceptions, particularly with regards to High School Ratings. There were six Charleston County High Schools that received an "excellent" rating. No High Schools in Dorchester or Berkekey County received this rating. Wando High School received an "excellent" absolute reating as well as an "excellent" growth rating. Four Mt. Pleasant Elementary and Middle schools received an excellent score. Rollings Middle School in the Dorchester School district received an "excellent" score, while Summerville High School's 2008 absolute score fell to "average" from "good" in 2007.
As I and others have pointed out before, test scores are only one indication of the quality of a school, at least relative to others in the area. However, the State Report Card Score is one objective criteria that can be used in evaluating a school and the educational and learning envirnment.
