The 2009 State Report Cards were released today with a number of schools showing improved scores over 2008.However, according to a story in the Post and Courier newspaper "the improvement primarily stems from changes to the state's accountability test and scoring system, and it will take another year before test scores can be compared exactly from one year to the next. State education leaders cautioned against making year-to-year comparisons, and they said elementary and middle schools didn't have as high a bar to cross this year to receive better ratings."

Even though apparently the 2009 scores have been "watered down" to a degree, they should be helpful in comparing the relative performance of the different schools to each other. Even though the scores from Charleston County remain poor as a whole, the Mt. Pleasant scores are impressive, with every school obtaining an "excellent" grade with the exception of one, Laing Middle School which received a grade of "good":
Elementary Schools
Belle Hall- excellent
Charles Pinckney - excellent
James B. Edwards - excellent
Jennie Moore - excellent
Whitesides - excellent
Mt. Pleasant Academy - excellent
James Island did well- two elementary schools, one middle and the HS were all excellent. One middle and two elementary were average. But they are appareently doing something right at Murray Lusane becasue it used to be perceived as a weaker school (now average.)
Flipping through I noticed West Ashley has a number of excellent ratings for elementary schools (4 of 7 and one good but all the middle schools and the high school are average. It would be nice if they distilled the ranges. ie- an 'average' student body or one with a lot of variance that averages out to averages. I suspect this high school has the biggest variance among students.
I was surprised so little in DD2 broke above the average rating- only six schools and none of the High Schools if I read correctly. I think those mega-sized schools just do not work anywhere except Mt Pleasant.
Hats of to Wando- it seems to be the only overly large HS that can break into the excellent category- non of the others even mustered a good.
By 2020 all students will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete
successfully in the global economy, participate in a democratic society and contribute
positively as members of families and communities.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this statement?
The person who wrote it doesn't know what kind of society that we live in....
We do not live in a democratic society (aka three wolves and a sheep sitting around trying to decide what is for dinner), we are a representative republic, very different situations.....
Just goes to show you that how can you trust a system that grades schools that is so messed up in the first place....
