Hi All
My (male) cat's litter box has a HORRIBLE ammonia urine smell. I clean it regularly, but it smells so bad. It is stinking up my whole apartment. I have to buy a new litter box ever couple of weeks and in a couple of days the smell is back. Any advice?! Thanks!

Yes and he isn't spraying or anything. It's just his litterbox. It's so bad that I'm embarassed to invite people over.

Are you cleaning the box with bleach? Plastic litterboxes are known for holding that awlful urine smell...cleaning it with a good enzyme cleaner may also help.
I just started using crystals in a new litterbox and I have no idea why, but they work unbelievably well containing the odor...Your litter may play a part in this too.

No idea if this could be related, but look into the food he's eating and also make sure he's drinking enough water. Does he eat wet food?

No, I haven't tried that, I'll give that a try. Thanks!

I think he eats and drinks enough. I adopted him about 3 months ago from the shelter and he is obese. I have him on diet dry food and he always has water available. He was raised on wet food, but he's on a diet now b/c he was so overfed by a previous owner.

After you clean the box...let it sun dry (if possible) and then spray the bottom with PAM! It really helps with litter not sticking to the bottom of the pan, and will help next time to clean the box.

Default cat box odor

sprinkle the litter with baking soda, and shake it into the litter. I usually put the baking soda in the bottom of the box before the litter, I also use a "liner" (trashbag) that way the odor doesn't "soak" into the plastic. try to shift the litter a couple of times a day to break up the wet litter.
hope it helps!

Aside from using baking soda or a different cat litter, research the food that the cat eats. I've heard people say that some foods cause smellier pee and poop than others.
