I have a cat I'm 90% certain is a Maine Coon. Its a long story, but he was part of an abandonded litter.

Do all Maine Coons have an M on their foreheads? My kitty has a mark that looks like a lopesided M. Otherwise he has all the characteristics of a classic Maine Coon.

Sad, but I think he was abandonded because he "wasn't perfect". He didn't have a perfect M!

I will post pictures when I get a chance!

Unfortunately, without CFA or TICA papers and a pedigree showing his lineage, you will never know. It is highly unlikely a PB litter would be abandoned. He is most likely a mix of somekind. I have one as well.

Shelby has the perfect answer.
The markings has nothing to do with the breed. Almost all markings and colors are allowed, except for a very few (which I am sure you will find in Shelby's link).

I can summarize a very brief description of a MCO: They have long and fluffy tails which should have the same length as their body, there should be fur between their pads, they have lynx tips and fluff out of their ears, the length of their fur varies all over their body, they do in general get large (overweight and large are two different things- one should always be able to feel a cat's spine under some flesh) and they have a characteristic sound- they often make a chirp instead of a meow.

Maine Coons are not full grown until around 3-4 years of age. I have one (90% probably) that I found in a cemetery. What a cutie. I've had others that I've gotten at shelters....very loving

If he's a tabby, the M mostly likely is for the markings of a mackeral tabby.

True, and plenty of cats can be mackerel tabby as that is only a cat's markings, not a breed. For example British shorthair, Norwegian forest cats, Persians, Maine Coons and also DSH and DLH.

KAtrine is right - the voice is often a good giveaway because it is unusual. Most people on seeing my cats (both Miane Coons) assume they must roar rather than meow and are very amused by the little chirp they produce.

Anotehr good indicator is the feet. Their feet have long fur between the toes and are partially webbed. Their fur is also semi-waterproof. If you spill a small amount on their back you can see it bead up rather than flow under.

Here's a picture of one of mine:

::sigh::
They are the coolest, most beautiful cats!
So big yet so mellow.
There are two Maine Coons in my neighborhood, and I pet them every chance I get.
Some day I might be able to bring one into my life, but my little Willow seems a bit feisty, and my husband just tolerates her as it is.

I wish I could pet my own Maine Coon when I wanted to. She just backs off. She only wants to cuddle like twice a day and she has to approach me. I can not come to her. Arrogant little lady. Mine does not like to be petted, she does love to play though.

I so agree! My guy Simon is Maine Coon/Persian. He is the biggest, laid back teddy bear one could ever hope for. Loves to be held and cuddled...absolutely nothing fazes him! This morning at 3 am, our fire alarm went off for some reason! All the cats ran and hid...not Simon, he looked at us from where he was sleeping like..."uh...could you keep it down please, trying to catch some zzzz's here!"
