If antibiotics are helping and he's getting better, then it's probably not a virus.
Antibiotics work on bacterial infections, not viral infections. However, bacterial infections often exist as secondary along with viral, especially URI viral infections.
That's why wide spectrum antibiotics like Clavimox or Baytril are usually prescribed for URIs. They clear up the secondary bacterial infection and allow the cat's immune system to more effectively fight the virus that is causing the respiratory infection.
Thank you for everyone who responded to my post. All of my cats are important to me but this little feral darling is one of the sweetest cats I have ever seen. The area where his family (and others) are located is the breakwall by the marina in Port Colborne's harbor and although my friends who do cat rescue go down and feed them regularly and look out for them, the extreme coldness of the weather down there is brutal on them. My baby probably wouldn't have survived the winter down there. I am going to make sure that he survives and has a long and very happy life.
I just wanted to update the situation with my little baby. I have been feeding him a mixture of rice, cooked liver and ground chicken or turkey twice a day along with his regular cat food (which is a natural food that I have found). I cannot believe the change in him. His stomach is nice and plump, the way a kitten's should be, and his coat is shiny. He has a lot more energy and is far more affectionate and loving. I feed him separate from my other cats so that he gets what he needs without being stressed out. I'm not sure what caused the change for the better, but I'm going to continue feeding him the liver/rice/ground meat recipe (even though liver makes me gag lol).
