can anyone come up with any reasons a cat would loose hair around their eyes?

If it's just around the eyes, I haven't heard of this. If it's kind of a band of thinning fur going from the eyes to the ears, it's just something certain cats get. One of mine has had this for a few years. I researched it online when I first noticed it, and mentioned it at a vet visit, and apparently it's harmless. I vaguely remember someone here saying it could be stress related, but I'm not sure about my memory there.

i had a little black kitty for about 18 years .... and periodically, she would lose the fur between her eyes and ears .... sort of a stripe effect.... the vet said it was a form of kitty alopecia and nothing to be concerned about.... i just called them her racing stripes....
