I have been looking into moving to Canada...it would be myself, my boyfriend, and my daughter. I have been looking at the website with criteria, and I don't exactly meet any of them. I am a student, but I want to live there permanently, not just while in school. If I have experience as a teacher's assistant in a classroom in the US, what is the likelihood of me actually getting a job offer from a Canadian school, and should I apply? Is applying for a Canadian job as an American citizen even allowed?

There is no other magic way to come to live in Canada, except for that website's criteria.

No, you have to have a legal status in Canada first.

P.S.: did you join C-D 2.3 years ago just to post your first post today? Just curious.

Well.. you are 'allowed' to apply.
Wether an employer will consider working on helping you with a work permit depends on a lot of things like is your job on the list of eligible ones on the website. And if they have enough qualified Canadian candidates they won't want the complications.

If you come to Canada as a student (on a student visa), you can get a work visa afterwards and then apply for permanent residence. It's not automatic but there is a route, unlike U.S. student visas which have no route to permanent residence.

tarp is correct, I have a friend from Russia who was going this route, but she fell in love with a Canadian man and got married so I can't really give you the details on how that worked out since the marriage made the point moot. Anyhow, you could go this route but I should point out that I know for a fact that there is indeed a shortage of teaching positions and many Canadians looking to fill them who can't get jobs. If you want to come, you may want to look at a field for which there is more demand.
