Hey everyone...! I'm currently looking for rental property and came across a nice home in Signal Hill. I've done some research and cannot find enough information on SH to make a decision on whether or not it is right for me. Can anyone here share thoughts about this area? I know its close to Long Beach which has good and bad neighborhoods....but I'm having a hard time reading this place. Are the evenings quiet or do I have to worry about gangs or college kids hanging out late at night? Is there a reputation I need to worry about?

Any thoughts and/or recommendations? BTW, I have no kids so schools are not an issue. Freeway traffic and job are also not an issue. Thanks in advance for your comments.

If you don't mind possibly having a oil rig in your yard.

It is a very nice area that borders a very bad section of Long Beach.

as they say...!@#$ flows downhill... Signal Hill is at the top of the hill.

All things being equal ... with schools not an issue, jobs not an issue, commute not an issue... why Signal Hill in particular?

Signal Hill is indeed nice, mostly. Just borders some bad areas of Long Beach.

Default Great place to live

I am a retired physician, I have lived all over LA county and love Signal Hill. By the way, it got its name from the Indians who used to canoe over here from Catalina Island some 23 miles away and send smoke signals to their relatives.

I rarely use a car, everything I need is walkable and within a block or 2

There are no subdivisions or track housing, architecture is mixed with Craftsman and Spanish being common. There are multimillion dollar homes and cheap studio apartments and everything in between.

The weather is very temperate, I don't think I have had to use my furnace or air conditioner more than a total of 4 weeks out of the year.

It is very convenient to the LA freeway system, you can get on the 405 or 710 easily, Long Beach International airport is less than 5 min from my house, the port of Long Beach and cruise terminal is a 10 min taxi ride away. There are museums, parks, playgrounds, entertainment zones, restaurants, shopping districts nite clubs and theatres easily accessible. There is a good bus system and a lite rail too. If it sounds like I am biased, I am, I love it here.
