Hello everyone! My family is considering moving to Redding, Ca. I would like to get some opinions on this city and whether or not it is a good place to raise a family. What are some of the things I should watch out for in Redding? Are there any serious crime issues I need to be aware of? What is the culture of the Redding area like? Is it a relatively clean city?

I'd like to hear both the good and the bad of the Redding area, but I am focusing more on the negatives because people tend to gush about the wonderful scenery, great housing prices, etc. and forget to mention the less attractive aspects of daily life. I found this out when I asked several people about Sioux Falls, SD - lots of people told me what they loved about the city, but not many people mentioned the less appealing aspects.

Thanks!

Default On a related note....

Has anyone here lived in Montana by any chance? I moved here last year and can't stand the culture up here. The towns tend to be pretty lawless and drugs and alcohol are a major concern. If anyone has spent any time in MT's cities, can you tell me how Redding stacks up against Montana's culture? I know the area is scenic, with Mt. Shasta, etc. and I am not asking about the scenic value of the Redding area. I already know it's beautiful. Rather, I am asking about the quality of life in the city itself.

Also, what is the surrounding area like? What are the nearby towns like Red Bluff, Shingletown, etc. like?

Default Wow, what city are you talking about?

I grew up in MT and have lived in various places there. Bilings, Helena, Butte. Now in LA-- Compared to here MT is heaven.

Look for the thread "Considering Redding, CA". Many of your questions may be answered there. Right now it's on page 2 of this California forum.

Default Redding area

I live about 20 miles south of Redding-in a rural area called Cottonwood. It's a nice place to live and raise a family, but like anywhere else, there are negatives.

The first one that comes to mind are the brutally hot summers. Daytime highs in July and August are normally in mid 100's. We also usually get one week or more of temps over 110 degrees. People for the most part stay indoors on those hottest days.

The economy is weak here. There are few jobs that pay a liveable salary. Because many folks for other areas of th estate have been retiring here, housing prices have jumped up over the last five years to more resemble the bay area or SOCAL.

There is much to do recreationally; Shasta and Whiskeytown Lakes, Lassen Park, Mt. Shasta, Trinity Alps, Sacramento River, etc. The Redwoods are about 3 hours west. San Francisco is only four hours away. The wine country is about 3 hours southwest.

Of course every community has its supporters and naysayers. It's a subjective-opinion based think. Personally, it's been a good place to raise a family. However, it is ultimately California; with all that conotates. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and even though this part of the state is isolated from the more urban areas to the south, the liberal politics are creeping north with the migrating urbanites. While this area remains conservative-there's a notable shift occuring.

For those reasons, we plan to leave CA-cash out our inflated equity (due to the increased house values) and move to another state upon retirement in 8 years or so. The "excess" cash can supplement our retirement somewhere else-with more conservative values.

When we used to live in Sacramento - we'd go to redding most weekends - shasta, bird watching, working the jolly green giant flea market, etc.

There used to be a whole lot of mobile home parks and rv parks in and around Redding. Many mobile homes were easy to buy and cheap then. As housing prices went up, and developers bought out a lot of land - has there continued to be a lot of mobile home parks and rv parks? Maybe just further out. We live in our house now but were very contented in our 31' RV in Sacramento - although we hated all the drive by shootings and murders in Sacto.

We considered Oklahoma but after this last ICE storm that struck everything from Oklahoma City (where I was born) north to Desmoine - and we have snow again just two days later - when we used to not get snow until almost februrary - we think the potential for violent storms including tornados is increasing, and Oklahoma gets a lot of them. There are plenty of jobs in Oklahoma but if a storm kills you - you won't need that job.

We also can get by with an average job - my wife works at a local casino and has for 4 years and we do pretty well on her salary and my SS. That casino there should be a shoein for her and we would work the flea markets again where we made a lot of money before - if we can find a place to park an RV. We see a lot of decent RVs for sale, but where to park them is a concern.
