Grey whales migrating way early, the Pier 39 sea lions are already in full force, the Canadian Geese arrived early, heavy early acorn drop ... signs. Indeed, signs.

I am usually at Sierra at Tahoe about 4 days a week.. If there is a lot of powder, I will be at Kirkwood, though.

Good call.

On a powder day, I can find stashes well into the afternoon by avoiding the more popular lifts and traversing into lesser known runs.

Living in Truckee for thirty years, I developed a good method to determine the severity of winter, I would look at the whiteman wood piles, big piles meant a big winter, small piles, a mild winter.

I also used the Truckee Weather Rock. If it was wet, I knew it was raining, white, I knew it was snowing, dry, I new it was clear weather....

Boreal has been making snow and will open today, the earliest opening date in its history. The previous earliest open was October 11, 2000.

I REALLY need to get cracking on that ski tune up (although I realize that at Boreal, in addition to it being "Boring Hill," I'd be outnumbered by boarders about 50 to 1 - LOL!).

I know people think Boreal is lame, but that's where I tend to go. It's small--moderate size, not too busy, and the closest to my house. As long as I can fly down some readily accessible green slopes, I'm good.

I've done Alpine Meadows, but for some reason I got injured every time I went there.

Holy cow, a positive word for Boreal Flats, 600 feet of vertical. There is a skiable sand dune near Death Valley with more vertical, ya'll got to challenge yourself, at least go to Donner Ski Ranch.

Another Boreal hater?

I could see how it would get boring if you were an advanced skier.
