I am planning on transferring 2010 to CSULB because I've heard they have one of the best programs for Social Work. I've lived in San Diego my entire live and I would like to know the differences between the cities and the schools in both cities. Is the temperature the same? What about the people (diversity), job opportunities, rent and prices for everyday things such as food and gas? Any info will be greatly appreciated, thank you (:

Other universities I am considering are Sac State, San Fran and Humboldt.

Thanks

I would think Long Beach is a bit more fast paced than San Diego in terms of lifestyle. I could be wrong though.

I would agree. Also, Long Beach is on the border of L.A. and Orange Counties surrounded by millions and millions of people. It feels bigger than San Diego IMO. San Diego has better beaches. Long Beach is more built up as well. There aren't as many hills and such and Long Beach's high population density (9,000+ per square mil) reflects the dense development.

Cal State Long Beach has a better reputation than San Diego State IMO as well. I believe CSULB is ranked higher by magazines like US News too and has less of a "party party party" reputation.

Long Beach has Snoop Dog ... San Diego doesn't.

Would your living expenses be higher in LB or somewhere else besides SD because you would be able to live at home in SD?

In Long Beach the average wait time for getting murdered isn't as bothersomely long as in San Diego.

EVERY school has a better reputation than SDSU (my alma mater)

There are lots of nice parts of Long Beach, no doubt. you should drive around there on a weekend, spend a couple days and get a feel for the place before making a decision. Parts of it are very similar to Mission Beach, like Belmont Shore and Naples.

One point in LB's favor, you're close to a Rosco's Chicken and Waffles.

Long Beach is basically as if San Diego was entirely surrounded by LA. It is a city in it's own right, but not the core of the region.

But eventhough it's not the core(if you consider LA the core, though LB commands the South Bay and Southeast LA County just fine), it has everything one needs at your doorstep. All your recreation, business, and other needs are here, like any major city.

@OP, If you want something like San Diego, Long Beach is the best fit than the other schools you chose. Temp will be more or less the same near the beach(within a quarter or half mile or so), but can get warmer, especially if you're away from the beach, because of the microclimates generated by urban development. It's one of the most diverse major cities around, sporting large white, black, latino, and asian(Cambodia Town/Little Phnom Penh is a highlight) populations. It's a big city with plenty of job opportunities. Goods will probably cost the same. Rent I'm not sure about, check out craigslist. I pay 1400 for a 2bd townhouse style apt in neighboring Los Alamitos(which is easy commutable distance to CSULB)

That's basically what I mean... LB is as if SD was plopped in the middle of another city. You get all of the benefits of LA as well as having another huge city with all of its jobs and amenities.
