There's that small factor called transmission that might possibly affect a state with 1.8 million residents a bit differently than it would a state of nearly 40 million.
My friend was walking her dog down a residential street in Santa Monica when a man pulled his car over and yelled at her that she was killing everyone by not wearing a mask. I call that living in fear.

https://covid19.ca.gov/state-dashboard/

Pandemic low 1.4% positivity rate yesterday statewide. 14-day positive test average now 2.6%, approaching the pandemic low of 2.5%. ICU patients down 70% over the last seven weeks.

Really is time to open up, especially 50% indoor dining and schools.

The number of well educated people in this state who will accept government rules even if they have no data to back them up is disturbing.

CA new cases were about 50% down from yesterday and deaths down about 20%.

But only about 6000 more tests.

Looking better. Still over 1,600,000 active cases.

I don't think cases are deemed not active unless someone dies (and with Long COVID having no known end date, that makes sense). If people are back at home, they're usually recovered enough.

Active are cases that have not closed due to still dealing with the virus.

Here is the site:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

Active vases have dropped but deaths just slowed as they still show climbing. Maybe by next week they will be going down. The big worry are the new strains that are easier to catch and potentially deadlier. one was first located in ... CA. They are also not sure of the vaccines will work, though likely they will have some effect. The number of strains is actually quite high, in the hundreds, but only around 15 are a real issue.

Nobody is tracking that closely. There is no way there are 1.6M active cases in California. Maybe some doctors record their patients as having recovered and then those cases are taken off the active list, but obviously many are wrongly left on it.

It is not good news.

"The UCSF study did explore that possibility. In its review of around 300 cases at UCSF sites, people carrying the California variant were 4.8 times more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and more than 11 times more likely to die than those with other viral strains. Those numbers may not paint the whole picture. The sample size was small and only had 12 deaths to look at, meaning the higher rate of deaths could just be written off as statistical chance.

Will it be resistant to vaccines?

Early evidence suggests that it could affect the efficacy to some degree.

Researchers test for this by seeing if the strain is resistant to the protection typically provided by antibodies, which patients have either because they’ve recovered from COVID-19 or because they’ve been vaccinated against it.

This variant was four times more impervious than the original COVID strain to the impact of antibodies in people who’ve recovered from the coronavirus, according to the UCSF research. The research also showed the variant was two times more impervious to antibodies in people who’ve been vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Those numbers are “moderate but significant,” the UCSF analysis said."

Now a bit too early to be sure, but not good news. They advise wearing two masks now, not one due to this strain.

The restrictions are going to have to go once the vaccine is available to anyone who wants one. People are not going to be willing to wait for zero Covid (because there's zero chance of that ever happening) to go back to "normal". New strains or not, we got to learn to live with risk. Those who want to leave in fear can spend the rest of their lives wearing 3 masks outside and distancing from anyone who doesn't live with them. Enjoy your "virtual" life.
