Bakersfield is NASTY-LOOKING. The only thing nice is the surrounding area and the orange groves.

If you think Bakersfield is nasty looking, you seriously need to travel more to other parts of the Country and other parts of the World....Sure their are some ugly parts of Bakersfield, but most of the city looks nice in my opinion...Lots of greenery and nice older/newer neighborhoods with views of the mountains in the distance.

First of all, "Reynosa, Tamaulipas"? That's random...

Second, you clearly have not seen all of Bakersfield if you don't think there are nicer areas.

Bakersfield, like any city has bad areas and is not in the best location overall for CA. However it really doesn't matter what other cities outside CA look like, the question is about Bakersfield. Good areas, yes, bad areas, yes. Now what is being done about the bad areas?

Some just want to denigrate an area because they do not like it. Specifics are far more valuable than just broad generalizations.

To the post entitled "Whats detroit got to do with anything" (sic):

The OP says they came from Detroit. It got me wondering what your relative experience of "nasty looking" places were. That's all.

I haven’t done any research on Bakersfield specifically. But we are looking into moving to the Central Valley area from Kansas City—relocating for my husband’s job. (Fellow Midwesterner) I’ve found that most people who tell you that the Central Valley is nothing but trash are California natives. They tend to compare it more to the Orange County and San Francisco areas. Nothing wrong with that, but to a Midwesterner, it’s avtually not that bad. The cost of living is better than a lot of major areas in California, and the schools are better than where we’re at. So in some ways, you have to take the negative feedback with a grain of salt. See if you can find another Midwesterner who has relocated for their opinion. It would align better with yours, in my opinion.
