I'd go for Santa Barbara.

Berkeley and Santa Cruz as second picks. Those two are more hippy towns. Santa Barbara is like a small, beautiful beach city with some diversity and you are not too far to visit LA for a day trip.

That's a tiny beach. Not much beach at all at high tide. That coastline's going to erode in the coming years.

Although, at UCSB, all those girls in mini skirts riding bicycles... Interspersed with the occasionally hilarious bike collision - those round abouts really tripped some people up.

Do the students really wear miniskirts? It's funny, because whenever I see a film that shows a university scene, it's often set at UC Berkeley. The stereotypical thing is to show the women wearing short skirts to class. In reality, no one dresses like that on campus! Everyone wears jeans! When I visit the UC campus, I'm usually the only one in a short skirt. Funny how TV/movies and reality diverge so much. That's the entertainment biz for you.

Maybe they should start filming the campus scenes at UCSB, then.

If the beach is part of your campus, you do. Bikinis underneath, since sun-worship is always part of the school day there. Board shorts and sandals. Might get to 8:00am lecture; maybe not. Hope somebody took notes.

Sounds like a great recommendation for UCSB. It also sounds like there will be a high percentage of prematurely-aged women among UCSB alumna, too.

Well, UCSB and UCB are two very different campuses - UCSB's is nicer!

But yes, it's right on the beach and people go there for the socal beach vibe - sandals, skirts, spaghetti strap tops, board shorts, etc...

Lots of hot chicks - and yet still one of the highest ranked public universities in the world - when I was going there they liked to brag that they had more Nobel laureates on faculty than any other school.

- Dorms that are clean, are good to socialise/meet people (important for an international student) and central on campus (also check out Isla Vista). CHECK
I will second other poster's nomination of UCSB (Santa Barbara). Checks just about every checkbox you've laid out. The campus is absolutely beautiful!

Have you ever been there? Tons of beach locations both on campus and adjacent to the campus (within biking distance). And with a car, even way more beaches and camping. Also has a beautiful lagoon as well... Very picturesque!
