I have sent off my application and have decided on Kansas. My friend is also going there. Thanks for all your help but California doesn't look the place for me

Really appreciate all your input.

OP, let us know after you've settled in. I hope you like Kansas. (No beach, no redwood forests, not exactly cosmopolitan, but I hear the Midwest is friendly, that's a plus.) We'd love to know. You might consider applying to Santa Cruz as well, in case you're not accepted in Kansas. It never hurts to have a Plan B.

The polar opposite of California in every way! Good luck.

Feel free to question them on why their legislature seeks to outlaw abortion, among other things (give you a hint: they're freaky religious out there)

And since you're a student of history, be prepared to hear how the Earth is only 6,000 years old, per the Bible, and how it's wrong to teach evolution in schools.

Unfortunately for the OP, Kansas is as far away from his ideal town seen in "Modern Family" as one can get.

Well I'm agnostic...are all the students ultra-religious?

I wouldn't say "all" the students. But Kansas is a conservative part of the US, compared to CA, which is liberal in the areas you were interested in. Religion is big in that part of the country. Whereas probably most of the people in schools in SD, LA, and Santa Cruz/SF/Berkeley are atheist or agnostic or disinterested in organized religion, the opposite will be true in Kansas.

Good luck. I hope it works out.
