Perry Mason, thanks for identifying the fig tree. I passed by it many times as a lad, over the years I have wondered about the tree, not having seen it in decades, I wondered if it was a Banyan tree.

Don't forget our California flowers. Here in the middle of January are my wife's plantings getting ready to pot up. (got 76 degrees today.

I feel very blessed to have been able to sit in the arms of this tree before it fell.

Although I doubt it, if that bristlecone pine tree in the first picture is indeed Methuselah, I know right where that tree is.

For those who love trees as much as I do (and my dog), this will make perfect sense:
When Trees Die, People Die - Lindsay Abrams - The Atlantic

Henry David Thoreau, writing in The Atlantic in June 1862, said, "I think that I cannot preserve my health and spirits, unless I spend four hours a day at least -- and it is commonly more than that -- sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from all worldly engagements."

What a great thread! One of the things I loved most when I moved to California after a life in the desert was the fact that everywhere I go I find the most amazing trees! I have a handful of favorites that I will often go a little out of my way while driving or walking to get a chance to see them. These pictures inspire me to go out and find even more! Thanks!

It appears that Methuselah had been recently dethroned as the oldest living tree in the world. Another Pinus Longaeva in a nearby grove is now known to be 300 years older. Of course, no pictures, no exact location.

it is always good to remember how the first Bristlecone pine was determined to probably be the oldest.... The Forest Service cut it down to count the rings. Prometheus tree
