I am in Charlotte, NC... and I hear all the time about how the state of California is going broke...Before I read the below story, I use to tell people that they were exaggerating...but after reading this...not so sure anymore......All i can say is WOW!!!!!!!
O-pinion: $484,000 for a state trooper? Not in N.C.

Great for shock, awe and inflammatory rhetoric but decidedly not typical. Was there a point to this?

My CHP cousin, who works out of the Fresno office at a resident post, is at ~110k per year. He takes his patrol car home and is subject to being rolled out of bed at any hour or in the middle of family activities.

The above won't ever be splashed across the Charlotte Observer because it's, well, typical and boring.

What they also don't tell is that the cost of living in California is higher than NC.

I can tell you of 25 cops in the Orange County Sheriff's Office Florida, that make over 125000.00 per year. Of course they are the ones with 20+ years of service.

The 1st ten or so years cops make a pathetic wage no matter what state they live in.

I remember as a state peace officer back in the early 80s being thrilled when I made just over $50,000 including overtime.

My first CDF Captain made 1200 a month in 1973. According to my handy dandy CPI Inflation Calculator, that's $6,251.81 per month in 2012 dollars. Y'know, back in the "good old days."

Where's the outrage?

Now, for some of that perspective for these "overpaid state workers" whiners: A CDF (Calfire) Captain, as of 2010, salaries out in two steps at Pay Code 1095: 3648.00 - 4432.00 and 4004.00 - 4865.00 per month. And he gets to risk his life in the process.

So, who is overpaid and when were they overpaid?
