Honestly, it isn't that difficult to find $85 billion in cuts in a $3.7 trillion budget. Democrats say the poor will die and Republicans say we will be defenseless. It's just scare tactics.

If my math is right (that's more zeros than I'm used to working with), that's like someone making $50k/yr cutting back by $95/mo.

California education estimated to take a significant hit if the sequestration actually takes place:

California will lose approximately $87.6 million in funding for primary and secondary education, putting around 1,210 teacher and aide jobs at risk. In addition about 187,000 fewer students would be served and approximately 320 fewer schools would receive funding. In addition, California will lose approximately $62.9 million in funds for about 760 teachers, aides, and staff who help children with disabilities.

I think pretty much everyone is tired of the inability to negotiate some budget agreement at the federal level, and to have these repeated "emergency" situations. It is making planning very difficult for many individuals and organizations.

This reminds me of local budget crises where the first thing they go for are libraries, schools, fire departments and other things that will get folks riled up so they call their representatives. They never start with some faceless bureaucrats down at the building, zoning, and health departments that nobody gives two hoots about.

That's about as much as my taxes went up this year, and my base salary is $60K.

Texas is losing almost as much as us, and they have 30% less population. Seems like the per capita impact is going to be harsher there.

Exactly, now you go from $50,000 to $48,850. Politicians must really be trying hard to make those cuts hurt Americans the most, it's quite sad.

I'd be surprised if the government couldn't cut $85 billion in military and foreign aid spending alone without harming our ability to protect ourselves. Politicians are simply choosing to make the 2.3% cut as painful as possible, so the public will force them to avert it.

Remember it isn't a real cut, it is a reduction in increased spending. Everyone still gets more than they did last year. Only in DC is a cut something that still gives more money to the various programs than they had last year.

Liberal Progressive math.
