In addition to other noteworthy trees, looks like California now has the tallest known maple in the USA, or world's tallest too.

Up in Humboldt redwoods

Story > Tallest Maple the Humboldt Honey

Short by redwood standards, but towering for a maple.

MDVaden has taken/posted many beautiful photos of Giant Redwoods in Northern California...

I think i read that MDVaden photographed & measured the tallest Douglas Fir, a while back.

The Bigleaf Maple is supposed to be the tallest of the maples on average from what I've heard. They do have the largest leaves hence their name.

Is that species of maple good for making syrup like the sugar maple?

Acer macrophyllum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I assume this is an Oregon maple which actually grows naturally as far south as San Diego County. Wiki says they can be used to make maple syrup (and maple beer) but that the taste of the sap is a little different from the traditional sugar maple.

California has several native maples. The most common one is Acer negundo. That is the Boxwood tree that is found along the creeks and rivers. Acer circinatum, the Vine maple found mainly in the northern third of the state and a few isolated areas south the the central Sierra Nevada. Acer glabrum, the Mountain maple, and Acer macrophyllum, which the article is talking about.
