In spite of the economic indicators all over the board that say it is better. Perhaps it's not growing as fast as we would like it, but it is growing nonetheless.

In SLO and Santa Barbara counties, home sales are up, new starts are up.

Did anyone bother to take into consideration the fact that I can sit at my computer in Los Angeles and technically be a student and "go to school" at Arizona State University?

Ever hear of online learning?

It's new and lots of people are doing it. Lots of college-age people don't have to leave California anymore to go to school in other states.

Unless it's a cohort program, otherwise yes. E-learning, not much good if your desire to be an Engineer at least the undergraduate level.

California may not have as many colleges for students to attend:

Very sad to see California in this situation.

No, California's cream of the crop goes away to Harvard/Yale/Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, Johns Hopkins, or Columbia.

Now, granted, for a California-raised person the East Coast is a bit HARSH to try to live in post-graduation. The competition for jobs there is FIERCE and that tends to drive us back out West.

People who go to the UC system from out-of-state have tons of money to spend because the UC being a "state" supported system, doesn't offer much in the way of financial aid if your parents make over the poverty level but not enough to pay the tuition out-of-pocket happily (that was my situation back in the 80s). The Ivies and the other "elite" universities, on the other hand, do offer full-tuition packages for those students who are in the "lower middle class." It's not a secret: Harvard, Yale and Princeton have it out on their websites.
