And interesting sentence,
Quote:
I was a native Californianian from the 1800s when my ancestors all entered the state from both sides and myself and all 5 of our grown children have all left the state,
I like the first part
Quote:
I was a native Californianian from the 1800s
and then what happened?

Quote:
when my ancestors all entered the state from both sides
Eh? Huh? As far as I know California has four sides.

Quote:
and all 5 of our grown children have all left the state
Which means something, i betcha, just not sure what.

It does bring up a question, could oldtrader be western pilgrim? Certain similarities in philosophy.

No I don't think WP is a native Californian. That's why he's a pilgrim. Old Trader is "Bear Claw" to WP's Jeremiah Johnson. Watch your top knot.

The population keeps going up so it just can't be that much of an "exodus". Also it is almost exclusively the poor and retirees who are leaving; the poor because they can't afford the good life so they're moving some where crappy which they can afford while the retirees are simply cashing out their home equity to find a cheap place to die. Neither of them are much of an economic lose and we're actually better off sending our poor economic losers to places like Texas and Arizona.

Enjoy them.

Then there's a shrunken middle class of public employees and, miles below, a permanent welfare class. As it stands today, about 40% of Californians don't pay any income tax and a quarter are on Medicaid ...

As progressive policies drive out moderate and conservative members of the middle class, California's politics become even more left-wing. It's a classic case of natural selection, and increasingly the only ones fit to survive in California are the very rich and those who rely on government spending. In a nutshell, 'the state is run for the very rich, the very poor, and the public employees.'"

Hammer, nail, wham.
The reverse political/economic/moral "dust bowl emigration".

No, during the dust bowl you actually had whole areas abandoned where entire towns just got up and left because there was simply no reason to stay. In modern California the successful and wealthy keep flooding in along with lots of new immigrants where as the poorest people as well as elderly pensioners are the ones leaving. If you can't tell the difference then you're not exactly a very discerning observer nor an accurate one.

Loads of wealthy people like Mitt Romney move here to buy beach houses and wineries while the guy who only makes $10 an hour moves to the crappy states because he simply can't afford anything better.

The Rich do not move to CA. They buy a house but pay no income tax as they are not residents. They get the goodies and the middle class pays for their ability to enjoy CA. The poor do not have to move from CA as they get paid by the State who collects from the ... middle class, not the Rich. Just check out Santa Ana for example or Anaheim.

Did Mitt "move" here or just buy a house here?

Wrong. Here is an article that explains a lot of what is going on.

Civic Report 71 | The Great California Exodus: A Closer Look

Things to consider:

1)--An average of one good size employer leaves the state every weekday, all year long. Taking the jobs with them. The state, unions, etc. are trying to keep some from leaving or opening new facilities in other states which is the reason for the big suite against Boeing trying to keep jobs in California and Washington.

2)--White (Anglo) population over the last 30 years, had declined to only 38% of the population in California and still rapidly declining as they have left the state. Down from 88% in the 1960s. The last census showed that. White residents will be soon outnumbered by both Hispanic and Asians which are both not far behind in population percentages.

3)--There is a negative migration to the state of native born Americans, being replaced by immigrants to the U.S. In other words, more American Citizens are leaving the state than entering it.

4)--Sales tax, corporate taxes and income tax receipts by the city and the state are now falling by double digit figures each year as the upper middle class and rich population and companies with money move out.

5)--Reason companies are moving out, opening new branches other places, etc., is because they can move to Texas, etc., and their costs of doing business drop by 40%. If the costs to do business in Los Angelos California is $50,000,000 per year for a big company, moving to one of the less costly states to do business will save them $20,000,000 which moves directly to their bottom line. This $20,000,000 can allow them to cut the prices to become more competitive and increase the volume of business they do, can allow them to give better benefits to employees, gives them money to expand the business, can give them a lot of money to pay out to stockholders, etc., etc. Along with this factor, and the living up to California regulations controlling everything they do, California is rated as the least Business Friendly state in the Nation, and they are going to raise the taxes again which will make California even less desirable for businesses, and will accelerate them leaving.

6)--Reason intelligent highly educated are leaving California. In San Jose with a typical Software Engineer salary is $116,574 in Cupertino, California and for the same standard of living it could decrease to $44,511 in Austin, Texas. In other words it costs about 250% more to have the same standard of living in California, vs. Austin. Now comes the good news, in Austin the typical Software Engineer will earn $99,836. In other words the Cupertino engineer would have to earn about $250,000 a year to have the same living standard as the the typical engineer in Austin.

Quote:
Also it is almost exclusively the poor and retirees who are leaving
Wrong. The poor are flocking to California as the benefits to the poor exceed what they get any place else. It is the educated and money class that is fleeing, as they can improve their standard of living by moving. This is easily proven, as the Hispanic population is growing by leaps and bounds, and the White population is rapidly shrinking. Also, the Americans moving from other states into California is lower numbers than those moving from the state, while at the same time the foreign immigrant population is booming.

All of this has been proven in earlier links.
