I just recieved a job offer, I have to choose a location Bakersfield or Fresno. The Fresno position pays a little more, but what Im more concerned about is the schools, crime, and overall family activities of each city.

I would pick Fresno myself, I'm sure there is more to do there and it's close to Yosemite and other beutiful places..Fresno facts will be along and knows the best areas to live and the answers to all your questions.

Take the Fresno job and live in Clovis. You'll be glad you did. More interesting metro area and closer to very pretty places in the Sierra like Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon Nat'l Parks. Clovis has a good school district that will allay any concerns you may have about the kiddies.

Well if Roaddog is willing to suggest Fresno over Bakersfield I don't know what else I can say ('dog is from Bakersfield and I'm sure he knows I'm joking with him
).
But in quick terms, crime levels in Fresno and Bakersfield has been similiar the past decade although Fresno has been slightly lower in recent years. Clovis has one of the lowest crime rates in the state among mid to large cities although it has been seeing an increase during the recession.
Schools - Clovis Unified (serving Clovis and parts of northeast/southeast Fresno) is an excellent district and there are also some good schools in other districts around Fresno. Ultimately it comes down to the neighborhood school in any city and there are some excellent schools in parts of Bakersfield. But in terms of an overall K-12 district, Clovis Unified beats anyone in either city.
Family activities - a wide range exists around Fresno. Some idea of the types of things you would be interested in would help me show you what matches that.

Fresno. Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Park are close by, if you like nature. Fresno has a better downtown and better shopping too. The air is slightly better in Fresno, as I hope you know the Central Valley bowl is known for bad air, Bakersfield being the worst.

Yep, I'd pick Clovis and north Fresno region any day over Bakerfield.

I reside in Bakersfield. For myself only, I choose Bakersfield because I have strong financial ties to the city.
For everyone else who is looking for a progressive city with more to offer, I suggest Fresno.

North East Fresno or Clovis. Also many smaller less urban burgs like Kingsburg or Sanger around Fresno if you dont like the big city.

I would live in Clovis and work in Fresno, you will be happier doing that than living to Bakersfield
