The same criteria used to rank and rate UCLA and Cal as the best is the same criteria used to rate the other schools. There is definitely a way to judge this.
Then feel free.

Too bad SLO isn't as good of a school academically overall compared to better UC's. That being said they are still one of the best in the CSU system and is still hard to get into.

Anyways, all of the UC's are good but Cal and UCLA are the most prestigious. Nothing against UCI, UCSB, UCSD... they are fantastic schools as well.

Keep in mind that the other campuses are newer, smaller and don't offer the same depth and breadth of programs (including big time sports) as the two larger ones. However the quality of instruction is pretty comparable. You'll get a great education at any of them.

Cal Poly SLO is primarily an undergrad school, thats the main difference, aside from that it is just as hard to get into and has a stellar reputation. See stats below, and also consider that Cal Poly is different in that you apply to the specific school you are going to major in ie; Business, Architecture, Engineering, Agriculture etc. You cannot get accepted as an undeclared major. For instance the competition for architecture or engineering is going to much stiffer than the overall acceptance rate below.

Cal Poly SLO for 2010 accepted 33% of applicants.

For 2010
UCLA accepted only 21% of applicants
UC Berkeley admitted 24.5%,
UC San Diego, 36.8%;
UC Santa Barbara, 41.7%;
UC Davis, 44.5%;
UC Irvine 45.4%;
UC Santa Cruz, 64.9%;
UC Riverside, 77.4%; and
UC Merced, 78%.

But to answer your question, people usually rank them as:
1. Berkeley
1/2. UCLA (depending on who you ask and what program you're talking about)
3. UC San Diego
4. UC Davis
5/6. UC Santa Barbara
5/6. UC Irivine
7. UC Santa Cruz
8. UC Merced
9. UC Riverside

...
For completeness, don't forget UC San Francisco. It should be on the list even though it does not have an undergraduate college.

To the OP, you might want to look at

Then you would also include the Hastings College of the Law.

I think you hit on something: they are all good, in fact most of the state schols are as well, the secret word: prestigious.

There are advantages to going to one of the smaller campuses. Cal and the city around it can seem pretty intimidating to a teenager living away from home for the first time. I would recommend possibly starting out the first year or two at one of the smaller ones before transferring to the larger campus. One negative with some of the Cal State schools is they have large commuter populations which kind of dilutes the full college experience.

@Mattclyde

Who do you consider to be the better UCs? Just UCSD, UCLA and Cal?

FYI, no company cares about where you got your degree after the first one. There is often much ado about nothing.

They care about the work you do, not where you went to school.
