Hi!My name is Eva and I'm from Spain. I've been offered a post at the South Dakota State University as a Language Assistant and I'd like to know the impressions of other people that have already visited this part of the U.S. I've heard that the climate is quite severe and I don't know whether to accept the post or not. Can you help me?
Regards,
Eva

Dear Eva:

South Dakota is COLD and BOOOORING. However, if you're looking to join a militia well then South Dakota is a great place to live with lots of friendly folk.

My girlfriend lived in Grand Forks--because she was forced to do so by her husband being in the military. She absolutely hated every second she was there. However, where there is extremely cold weather, you will find that the crime will basically be a non-issue. Oh, and she bought a house for $22,000, fixed it up and sold it for double that! She also got her Bachelors while there. So, I guess it wasn't a total bust. The cold weather was just too much for her. She said it was unreal and that comes from a girl from Ohio--where we know what cold weather is.

My opinion is based on having relatives who live in Spain. I think you should consider a warmer climate like California. It is a shock to be cold that many months a year when you haven't been raised in it. The Spaniards I know and love are social people and it is hard to socialize and get out in freezing weather. California is known for its diversity, also.

Default hi eva!

how about hearing from someone who actually lives here?
i don't live in brookings, but i've been there many times! my brother-in-law graduated from SDSU last year. he really liked it there! but had to relocated about an hour away for a job.
the weather is not the best here, it can get really cold in the winter. And miserably humid in the summer. But in my opinion it's a great place to live. but i like small town living, low cost of living, friendly people, you can really get involved in the community easily, safe place to raise kids, no traffic, and everyone knows everyone.
people from other parts of the country tend to think this isn't a good place to live, because of steriotypical judgments they've formed. but i've found that generally they have NO clue what they're talking about or what they're missing.
i grew up outside of San Fransisco, i've traveled all over the mediterranian and go to england every summer...but i CHOOSE to live in a very small town in South Dakota.
Good Luck at SDSU! make the best of it, and don't let negitive people influence your life!

Just curious, but why would you revive a post 7 years old?

He had spent the last 7 years carefully crafting his response to this burning thread. After almost a decade of consideration, deletions, rewrites, and hackjobs, he settled on "u mean San Diego State University, right?".

You only get one chance to make a first impression on a Spaniard chick who posted in the wrong forum about an obscure university in a frozen hellhole. I think Lafferty Daniel nailed it and I hope Eva is impressed.

Golf clap, sir. Golf clap.

South Dakota is okay. Badlands and the Black Hills are neat. Mitchell Corn Palace is the most amazing corn palace that I have seen.

OP, did u mean San Diego State University?
