Perhaps Nederland would be a good fit for you.

There is a nice ski area 10 minutes from town:
Eldora Mountain Resort - Home
I've heard a lot about Taos but I've never been there. I can only compare the stats: Nederland has a smaller population (1,400 vs 5,000) and is at a higher elevation (8233' vs 6967'). It's a 25 min. drive to Boulder and 45-50 minutes to Denver for other "stuff".
I don't have firsthand experience with the schools but Nederland Middle/Senior High is part of the Boulder Valley School district.
