Hi Folks,

I am looking for leads on towns/neighborhoods near the Boulder/Denver area so that I can commute in 2/3 days per week to work but rent a small house ($800 - $1200) with yard for my 2 kids and 3 dog family - no new construction/wood burning stoves ok kind of thing.

We love to snowboard so being near a cheaper mountain area would be nice and then of course there is the school issues for my kids (middle and high school) and alternative/charter schools would be great to know about as well. I am looking for a community something like Taos, New Mexico or Venice Beach without the drugs (where we use to live) regarding mentality/ diversity of income/totally fine with gays/anarchists/and transgendered parrots, etc.

Any ideas/suggestions you can share with me? All appreciated.

Cheers,
gari

Perhaps Nederland would be a good fit for you. Town of Nederland, Colorado
There is a nice ski area 10 minutes from town: Eldora Mountain Resort - Home
I've heard a lot about Taos but I've never been there. I can only compare the stats: Nederland has a smaller population (1,400 vs 5,000) and is at a higher elevation (8233' vs 6967'). It's a 25 min. drive to Boulder and 45-50 minutes to Denver for other "stuff".
I don't have firsthand experience with the schools but Nederland Middle/Senior High is part of the Boulder Valley School district. Home (http://www.bvsd.org/schools/nmshs/Pages/default.aspx - broken link)

Any transgendered parrots? I thought they had a bar next to the metro-sexual mule deer hair salon....
