I just started reading this book and can't. put it. down. The HBO is coming out with the show based on the novels with the first season based on A Game of Thrones and I'm so excited!!!
I just ordered the first book today. One of my friends has been trying to get me to read it for years, and I decided it was finally time to give it a try. :]

Did you get the book yet? Have you start reading it? I'm dying to talk to someone about it!!!
The best series of fantasy novels ever written!! Yes better than Tolkien.
Oh I agree. I have a confession to make. I didn't finish the first Lord of The Rings.
Look, I understand the beauty of Tolkien's words, I appreciate descriptive writing, but I guess I must be slightly ADD, because I simply don't have the patience to read through gazillion pages of him describing the forest. I need more dialogue.
On the other hand, A Game of Thrones has everything. Great dialogue and the descriptive writing. He creates the entire world in such depth and beauty and at the same time keeps me on my toes the whole time.
Love the first book. Can't wait to read another one.
This is a topnotch series, although I do think a lot of the steam has gone out of the engine over the last book. And I'm becoming more and more doubtful that Martin is ever going to finish. He's been "almost done" with the next book for about six years now. It seems to me he's lost his verve for this story and is writing out of sheer obligation at this point.
But comparing it to Tolkien is a bit of a case of apples and oranges. Tolkien was writing a Classical Romance. Martin is writing a post-modern Fantasy.

I agree about GRRM losing steam. kind of reminds me of Stephen King crapping out half way through the Dark Tower series (granted, he had good reason to w/ his car accident and all). hopefully he has a chance to complete the series, unlike Robert Jordan

Well, I hope that Martin will gain some steam back now that the show will be on HBO. Perhaps will get some inspiration from seeing the visual, I would be sad to see the series going down the drain. I just finished my first book, can't wait for second one, and sad to hear the steam had gone out for the last one.
And in terms of Tolkien/Martin - when you are right, you are right.
