It's kinda jarring looking at different areas. I see some of the hints online of the construction I was surprised to see in the Altadena area from the last time I was there. However, the 280x119 general area is quite out of date (Second Publix not even built). I can't see the church in front of the Finley Roundhouse either.

It would have to be that or even later, because the barriers are up around the new Southern Research Institute project on Arrington. I can't remember the exact date they put those up but it wasn't that long ago.

Oh, and that pretentious, tacky-assed faux Williamsburg-style house on Country Club Road in Mountain Brook. The only thing missing from that place is a damned lawn jockey out front.

Nevertheless, Google Earth is proof we live in an amazing world.

Downtown and immediate surrounding areas seem up to date through June.

Parkside stands out the most to me. Last update didn't have any of the 5 or 6 newer developments shown in that area. Edgehill (former Southtown) shows the first building starting construction and The Star (former Carraway) shows demolition well underway. Also can see the footprint of the new development at the former Trinity site (that one is heavily wooded and hard to see right off Montclair when driving by).

Tangent: Looking at the map really makes me wish they'd fix up the 5th Avenue north underpass and add walking paths through it (They might've, but it was the creepiest place in Birmingham to walk through the last time I tried. So I haven't exactly gone back to check. Even without a sidewalk, it needed some renovation as it looks like it was once quite pretty. If I weren't so creeped out and had a flashlight, I'd want to explore that door to nothing.). North of the tracks, it's a bit of an annoyance that it's basically from 2nd until 7th to be able to walk (and 2nd basically requires you to go north to 5th afterwards anyway. 1st North is a long bridge walk with no shade.) Pair that with a pedestrian/bike bridge from the end of Morris to the back side of Sloss, and walking connectivity would go a long way over there. It's kinda funny how north of the tracks, it's easier to cross under I-65, but south it's easier to cross under the Red Mountain Expressway.

Interesting item on tomorrow city council agenda...

ITEM 30.
A Resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute any and all documents
required for the City to apply for a Reconnecting Communities and
Neighborhood (RCN) Program grant from United States Department of
Transportation in the amount of up to $15,000,000.00 to convert 4th Ave
North from a one-way to a two-way from 24th Street to 9th Street. This
grant requires matching funds in the amount of twenty percent (20%) of
the total grant received by the City and authorizing the Mayor to take any
and all actions and execute such documents as are appropriate and
necessary to accept and expend the grant funds on behalf of the City in
accordance with the grant documents. (Submitted by the City Attorney)
(Recommended by the Mayor and the Chief Community Planner)

Make sense. 2nd and 3rd are already one way streets. Wish they would add 5th Ave with that.

This grant would be huge for the 4th Avenue Business District, and for downtown Birmingham as a whole! I want to see all downtown Birmingham Street converted back to two-way. It would definitely make downtown more walkable and pedestrian friendly.

Did I miss in the article how many jobs that creates?

Cool new map of downtown neighborhoods and districts

Also a big day in the Civil Rights District today. Lots of out of state visitors and dignitaries to see the AG Gaston Motel restoration and the famed "War Room" Shuttleworth and King worked out of and commemorate 1963.
