I wonder how the meeting went...guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks. If the POTUS said 'no,' would there be any bother for a later announcement or if he said 'yes' would there be any need for a petition...

Fox6 is reporting that Mayor Bell's office will make a major announcement next week about the National Park issue. The fact that President Obama even had a meeting with the mayor is a really good sign that something big is happening. That National Park designation would be huge for downtown Birmingham.

The November 2016 AAA publication "Alabama Journey" has some great articles describing what's going on in Birmingham. They cover the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, The Redmont Hotel, the growth of restaurants and retail establishments in Avondale, Avondale Park renovation, Lakeview transformation, the Loft District becoming a dining and shopping destination, the Birmingham Art Crawl, etc.

I can definitely see why Birmingham folks are getting excited about what's going on down there. (Don't tell anyone, but we've started sneaking down there a lot more these days ).

Birmingham residents, the majority of them (city and metro) has been upbeat about the city since 2010. We already had a few spots that's been here since before then. But once railroad park was built...the city took off. Its so crazy how one thing has flipped an entire city back on the good side. That article you mentioned (which I read) could have been 10-15 pages long as to whats the dining options here. Not to mention all the development that's built, in the process of being built, and what's being built in the future is unbelievable. Glad you can make it to the city to enjoy. All this constructions can be a bit crazy too. And this is only the beginning really.

i agree that railroad park definitely seemed to be the spark, especially after the recession killed some of the momentum from a few years before. now you hear people talking about what's going on in birmingham all the time. that didn't used to be the case.

Yeah, RR park seemed to be the biggest/first catalyst and it is still going... this could be the next big thing:

What would the upshot of such a designation be? I assume funding for some of the projects in that area might be easier to come by? Anything else of note? Would crimes committed in that area be under a different jurisdiction or subject to different penalties? What else?
