How are the water rates for piped water on Hawaii?
It would be nice to be out of the rain, but I'd like to have a lot of garden. Northern part of the dry side, since I suspect water prices will be different in different locations.
Where exactly will your property be located? Do you plan to buy in a subdivision that has county or private water? Are you aware of the many subdivisions that do not have county or private water available? I would think that once you find a place that you like that you could talk to neighbors about their water usage and needs.
One thing that you should check with the county on is the cost for a new water tap.
We pay about $28 per month for water -- two people, 1/3 acre. We do not have a sprinkler system and usually don't need to do much outside watering unless it hasn't rained for a week or so. We also do not have a vegetable garden or anything needing a lot of water.
Here is a story for you in the link below - it references the average bill is $40 a month - I don't have kids and don't need to water my lawn and I pay less than $30/month.

Can you be more specific on the area? Here's two leads:
Waikoloa Village is private piped water. Hawaii Water Service Company rates, phone (808) 883-2046
The Kohala Ranch Water Company, or KRWC, is a private system owned by the developer and regulated by the Hawaii Public Uitilities Commission (PUC). It provides water to Kohala Ranch, Kohala Estates, Kohala by the Sea, Kohala Waterfront Joint Venture, and several properties above the Ranch, and has a commitment to provide water to the coastal land directly below the Ranch. It also provides water to the Hawaiian Home Lands to the south - though technically this is a temporary service.

I live in South Kohola in Waikoloa, and my water rates for 2 people and watering the yard almost everyday (and fruit trees etc) run about 25-35 bucks a month.
We are on County water and it's about $40 to $50 a month and that's two people on a town sized lot with garden watering. When we don't water outside, it's about $30 to $40 a month. The rental house has four adults in it, garden watering and runs about $55 to $60 a month.
Nobody really conserves on water around here. A friend on the mainland tells me she let her lawn die since she couldn't afford the water rates were she lives.
Aha! Now we know, Whtviper1, that what you're drinking isn't water!
Is that a condo type water bill? I thought water on Oahu was more expensive?
