Giants have won 4 in a row and just swept the Padres.

Pull within 7 of AZ and 6.5 of ATL.

Ominous, very ominous..

Bill Neukom had an idea, a plan, a vision..and he was a true fan. He will be sorely missed.

This development, and the wording accompanying it, suggests a fundamental change in the Giants philosophy. I don't see how this can be seen any other way than as bad news for Giants fans..

The Giants have the largest ownership group in MLB. It follows that whichever of the owners is made the chief operational officer, is not going to be able to exercise power as freely as someone who owned a majority, or at least a large percentage of the team. There is going to be a long accountability chain, the operating executive, the executive board and the other vested partners.

Neukom's sin appears to have been spending money without consulting that accountability chain, and in the process, bumping expenditures past the limits imposed by the ownership collective.

So it may not be a matter of the firing being reflective of a fundamental change in the Giants philosophy, but more a matter of the public having a misconception of what that philosophy was. Neukom's enthusiasm for spending appears to have been the anomaly which created that misconception.

The Giants are leading the Rockies 7-2 in the 7th and Pablo Sandoval has already hit for the cycle in the first six innings. He came up in the sixth needing the triple, and with the announcers talking about how Pablo needed to triple and about how he had only one triple this season and...whap, Pablo hits exactly the sort of ball he needs, a deep fly to right center which the centerfielder fell down on while trying to catch it.

It should have been an inside the park home run. Sandoval had thought he had hit it out and started for first at trot speed, only going into high gear after he rounded first and realized the ball was in play. He made third easily despite his slow start, so an all out effort may well have produced four bags...but then no cycle.

Pablo should get an award for the comeback player of the year. He is the most improved in the league.

Giants win. Panda hits for the cycle.

7 back of AZ and 6 back of ATL.

BELIEVE!

If Atlanta goes 6-6 in their last 12 games, the Giants would need to go 12-0 to tie them for the wild card.

Or the Braves could go 0-12 and then SF only needs to go 6-6 to tie.

The Giants magic number is 18...any combination of 18 Brave losses or 18 Giants wins..and they tie. Of course 18 anything is impossible for one team when there are but 12 games remaining, so 33% of the chance the Giants have left is completely out of their hands.

Giants would host the tie-breaker if that happens?

Giants also play AZ 3 times.
