People, can you stop creating traffic jams with the neverending braking? If someone two lanes over brakes, you could keep going forward, and not brake. What a concept. If the road curves, these fancy modern cars handle real well, you could not brake.
If you are going down a hill, you could let the car go, you will not fall off the earth. Have fun, enjoy the ride. STOP BRAKING. or change the name of this area to BrakeMore.
Bmore, the B stands for Brakers.

Stop being reactive brakers. Gas pedal is on the right, GO!
The traffic here is not volume generated. It is BRAKER related.
Traffic coming on to 695 - you do not have to yield to them, NOPE, just go, they will figure out how to merge o!n.

Toyota drivers are the Volvo drivers of Maryland, ANNOYING, brake brake brakers.

Please get out of my way, you make driving here so miserable

OMG I thought it was me. When I'm in Baltimore, drivers "break" for everything. They don't drive forward, swerving lanes, on the phone, driving below the speed limit. I don't think they wanna go where ever their driving too. Like stagnant water. Your right about traffic volume, there is none, just slow drivers creating traffic. 695 is worse than city driving. Drivers here are being taught to drive reactionary and not proactive.

All of what you guys said.. and driving 5 miles under the speed limit the furthest fast lane on the Beltway.. AND if that isnt bad enough people going 5 mph slower than him in the second and someone going 5 mph slower than that person while traveling in the first lane creating a wall of faux traffic and nothing but clear blacktop out ahead of them....They travel this way as traffic stacks up behind them and they are oblvious to it .......Then.. someone gets really pissed tailgates them until a car length of space opens up and cuts around them. They appear stunned that someone actually wants to get somewhere..and would cut around them.. by that time everyone behind them is doing the same and they FINALLY get the hint to ahhh move over.....

This happens on Russell all the time. I guess everyone has to slow down and look in the casino.

I remember watching a mythbusters episode that tackled this topic not long ago. A few people braking for no reason is more than enough to cause a traffic jam. That's why many times traffic is bad on both sides of a highway after an accident, people slow down just enough to see what all the commotion is about. I even remember hearing earlier on the news that there was an accident on 83 around Belfast Rd, and both sides were slowing down, even though it only affected one side.

Although I couldn't find any footage from the episode, here is a video that demonstrates the basic principles of the effects of braking in traffic.

thanks for that = I hate braking and try to drive with minimal braking, so this area is very frustrating. I lived in Miami, now that is a great FAST driving city!
BALTIMORE, try to stop braking today!
THANKS

It is mind boggling. I swear on 695 in the mornings I think everybody took too much methadone. So I take back roads and of course there is always one individual who cannot exceed 30 mphs without suddenly breaking "FOR NO REASON" other than apparently they observed the speedometer hit 32 mph. It's my biggest pet peeve of the Baltimore region. That and the insanely apathetic customer service.

If you think normal daily driving is bad, you should experience the roads when any sort of weather happens, like this morning, for example. Baltimoreans do NOT know how to drive in winter weather AT ALL. I saw two cars spin out just walking to my car this morning.
