Mt. Washington is certainly a great neighborhood in Baltimore city for raising kids. And while I have a positive outlook, I will reiterate that Baltimore doesn't have the public transport of NY, and if you don't have a car it might be tough to get around a neighborhood like that. If getting a car isn't a possibility, another idea is to look around neighborhoods in the center of the city like Charles Village, Remington, and Waverly. Housing can be found for pretty affordable rates around there, and it's pretty safe (just have your wits around you). Union Memorial Hospital is right there, and I know some employees of the hospital that live within a few blocks. There is also a shuttle to Johns Hopkins Hospital between the hospital and the university. Plenty of buses around that area. Unfortunately public transport availability and good schools often don't overlap as often as I would like. Northern areas like Medfield and Mt Washington might be your best bet if you can get close to the light rail stops. I know buses come through Mt Washington village.

I would look at the crime map linked below to narrow down your search (it depicts only homicides, from the 1st half of 2012). In my opinion the map accurately represents the prevalence of crime by neighborhood. You can check it out and judge for yourself. While Baltimore will be somewhat cheaper than Brooklyn, you may want to focus your search on a one bedroom to afford a safer community and better commute (around $800). Best of luck!

The reason most neighborhoods are bad is because of your predicament. Fatherless homes. You are better off just staying where you have a family structure in place so your kids are not robbing and killing in ten years.
