i am in the market for a new car, one that will be large enough for my 3-person family and our boxers. our first concern is price, i really really want to stay below $30k, and under $25k would be super (but not, i think, possible). second is gas mileage and third is roominess. we have looked at mazda5, vw golf tdi (knowing we would need a cargo thing for the roof for vacation traveling) and vw passat wagon. what are your your thoughts on these cars or do you have other suggestions? i do want leather seats (dog hair, lol) and a navi. thanks for your input!
Do you really want to keep the dogs inside the vehicle? How about a 4 door compact pick-up and put the dogs in the bed? The dogs will eventually make the inside look nasty if you don't clean up behind them everytime they ride. Unless you cover the seats up.
go for a ford escape and put a divider and the a rubber matt in the cargo area so the dog has the back to walk around in it will hold all your family members gets good fuel mileage and can hold all your stuff
How about the new Subaru Outback? Lot's of options to spec it out the way you want it to keep the cost down. Get's good MPG and has standard AWD. It's a pretty nice package overall. I believe it runs from ~$23k 4 cyl. Base up to ~$32k for the 6 cyl. Limited. If you are an active family, which it sounds like you are, Subaru is really trying to market to you with this vehicle.
Outside of that, any of the other newer crossovers would be a good option. The new Chevy Equinox is very affordable and gets awesome MPG in 4cyl. FWD setup. The only downside is that nav is in the form of OnStar turn-by-turn directions, which is a subscription service. The Ford Escape, while a little smaller is also something to check out as the other poster suggested. One good plus for the Escape is the tech packages you can put in the car. Ford's Sync system is really cool.
Getting one of those for less than $30k is tough, plus it does not get decent fuel mileage.
