Its also small inside - no way you'll fit a family of three and two boxers!

A wagon is the sensible choice, the Subaru is a good choice since its relatively large. Maybe a Mazda CX-7, or Ford Escape as other good choices.

Yep, several suggestions that fit what the OP stated.

Others, not so much...

make sure you get a large wagon like the Volvo V70 or Passat Wagon where you can put up a screen between the cargo area & passenger seats to sequester your dogs. Active dogs will make a mess out of any car interior no matter how well-behaved they are, so you really need to keep them in the back.

thanks for your replies everyone. i have been feverishly flipping through my consumer reports car edition and searching online. i am not really an suv person and would prefer a car. am having a bit of difficulty with admitting i need a wagon or minivan, lol. (am i really that old?) i think i am leaning toward the jetta wagon tdi. the mpg seems great and i LOVE the sunroof!

Do people still do that in some parts of the country? That is illegal in my state. Talk about dangerous for the dogs.

Personally I prefer an SUV with my dogs. With all the drooling etc., I would prefer them to be in the back. I'd also recommend a Subaru.
