I wonder if they share the same tech or may be trying to even compete with eachother? My guess is that the Kia, in the very least, is probably trying to compete in a smaller segment...maybe something like a "hybrid Cobalt", where the Hyundai is a go at the Prius.

Kia is a Hyundai brand, and Kias are for the most part rebadged Hyundais. Saying Kia is competing with Hyundai is like saying Dodge is competing with Chrysler.
Doesn't look like much of a car for the rural places. Pretty much to go food shoppin would be the fuel savings in gas, on way. Might be a good city car for those who drive 15 or 20 miles one way though.
Still it will spin the dial plugged in. It will be a royal mess when the batterys are dead green wise, and pretty costly to buy new batterys.
If there is a wiring flaw, thar's no telling what might happen then.

Yup, that's what makes it seem so odd to me. I'd almost think that Kia wouldn't even be allowed to create something so similar, especially since they're both using the plug-in gimmick as the main selling point. One has to be radically different than the other in some way, it should be fun to watch these two develop into production models to see exactly where all of this eventually goes.
I disagree that they have to be radically different. They can be made to appeal to different market with different options, trim levels, etc., kind of like the Toyota Camry and the Lexus ES350 appeal to different buyers even though they're essentially the same car.

Well for years chevy competed with pontiac.olds with buick and buick with cadallac for market share, There was intense competion with in divisons. For example olds did share the hydromatic transmiison until years later wit the other brands.Some say that is what actaully started to bring GMN down to where they never were the inventors and leaders of style agin.
