Try to do as much as possible on my own, but changing out my timing belt on an interference motor (1.8T)........gonna get some qualified assistance on that one.
It depends on whether you have a mechanic you can trust. I do. Yesterday, I took it in for an oil change. I buy my own oil and filter wherever I can get the best sale price, he changes it for $12, and I like the idea of having his practiced eye looking around when he's under there, and a practiced ear when he starts it up, and a practiced feel when he pulls it into the bay. If there is anything I'm concerned about, I ask and I'm satisfied that I get honest answers, which are well worth the price.
Auto parts stores will often replace things like bulbs and wiper blades at no charge when they sell the part.
I am a decent shade tree mechanic but joint problems prevent me from doing a lot of the things I used to do. One of the neighbors is turning out to be pretty handy with my tools. He has been doing brake jobs, power steering pumps, starters and battery swaps to earn extra cash. In exchange for using my tools I get free work done. So far it has been a great arrangement for both of us.
