I hate to get political in the automotive forum, but there's no way around it. If I understand it correctly, under Obama's plan cars will have to get 39mpg by 2016, there's NO WAY that a V8 powered Corvette, Camaro, or Mustang can do that. I seriously doubt anyone will buy a hybrid/electric Corvette. Maybe it's all cars combined must average 39mpg, but still even that way I don't see room in the line up for muscle cars.
As much as we want to blame him it is not his fault. He is only doing what any other president would be doing. Bush wanted to do the same thing but did not really care as much due to the need for it in the "distant" future and the fact that he was oil money. I would not blame Obama because he is only doing what anyone would do but I think the conventional muscle car will be gone but I do not think fast cars will be. Companies now will just have to think of more innovative ways to produce fast vehicles, and believe me there are MANY other ways.
Jay Leno has answered this question or a similar one very well. Green cars won't kill petrol cars, much in the same way that cars back in the day didn't kill the horse. If anything it stopped the torture and poor care of horses so that they can be used on the weekends recreationally. Muscles cars already exist and they will become classic cars that can be used recreationally on the weekends. Newer muscle cars will most likely lose a bit of that heritage, but that has happened since a long time ago.
Effective ;yes. In fact i highly doubt that domestic automakers can compete in this new environment. Many european cars will be eliminated unless he lets some in for the elite thru some phoney tax skeeem of pay more. Its liike cap and trade i that it always favors the elite by giving them a out of many such issues.
These are CAFE standards, the average of MPG for all the cars sold during the model year IIRC. And, GM has some dodges, for example if a Corvette was built to run on E-85 (and before you laugh your head off, Google the stuff and see what it's octane rating is...) only the 15% gasoline burnt counts against the CAFE standards.
It just pushes the builders to sell a lot of small, efficient cars and fewer guzzlers.
whatever comes of all this, we can be sure of two things:
- someone will figure out a way to make it go faster
- someone else will figure out how to make it lighter / handle better in the twisites
then the two of them will argue the merits of their modifications to no end
FWIW, I thought something that happened in the 1970s killed the muscle car (I was to little to know) and the modern muscle was just the natural cycle of stronger and faster "becuase we can" repeating itself, only this time with airbags, good brakes, and independant suspension
Forgot to add, I do think a full electric muscle car can be a good idea.
Maybe, but it would be kinda hard to put a nice sounding set of Flowmasters on an electric motor.
