It's been raining like crazy in Houston. I left my car on the street and water level was high enough to get inside the car. Now it won't start. The "check" light is on.

I need help, please. What's wrong and what can I do to fix it? Thank you.

The check engine light is supposed to be on when the key is on but the engine is not running. Is the water still high? Is there water covering the tailpipe?

Honda Accord EX 1994

The water most definitely got inside the pipe. About an hour after the first try, I was able to get it started and drove to the driveway. Now it won't start again. On my car there is a problem when the "check" light is on. . I was able to start when the light was off. I noticed that the car was very weak and unable to drive up the driveway the first time. The exhaust fume smelled real funny. I appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you.

I had this happen to me whenever it rained heavy. The problem was that the wire were so old they became corroded so whenever there was heavy moisture in the air (such as rain) the car would not start. Just something to consider and have checked.

I am clueless when it comes to cars. What wire are you talking about?

I am worried I have might have made it worse.

Edit: I just tried to start it again. Nothing. Nada. "Check" light is still on. I know the battery and starter work because the engine is cranking. It just won't start.

You didn't make it worse. Something got wet and needs to dry out. Is it out of danger of more flooding? If you knew what you're doing, you could blow out the electrical components with compressed air, but it sounds like, in your situation, either get it towed to a shop, or let it sit and dry out for a day or so....
Electricity doesn't like water... get something wet and you're in trouble....

If you have a leaf blower you can try to dry the engine compartment with it. That's what I use when I clean my engine.
