I install the k & N air charger kit on my 1996 impala ss.I notice a unusual smell coming from the engine compartment. It almost smell like a burning smell.Have anyone install a k&N filter kit and notice a different smell.I know nothing isn't burning.I also remove the both air resonators,so i can get a non restricted flow.
The K&N Filters need to be oiled to work properly, I recommend the spray oil.
Are any parts of the shield or tube touching against something hot in the engine compartment?

hold on, if he bought it brand new then it should be pre-oiled. if thats the case OP, DON'T oil it. too much oil on the filter = bad news.
and if that is the case, that its new and you just installed it, AND the smell is from the new filter, it should go away after you get some miles on it
I don't remember any particular smells when I installed one. Sure the oil smell on the filter is there but you gotta put your nose right to it (and yes it comes pre oiled and don't worry about cleaning or re-oiling it for a long, long time). I tend to think, like somene said, one of the non-metal parts are touching something and he is smelling some plastic burning.
The biggest difference you should get is the sound of the car, since the primary function of the restricted stock intakes are for noise suppression.
