We have started religiously putting in a bottle of Bar's Leak Antirust and Waterpump lubricant with every coolant change. We add it to the 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. Ever since we have been using it the entire cooling system stays spotless with no rusting of steel parts like the springs inside the lower hoses and the inside of the cooling passages.

We replaced the intake on my Sons hot rod and when we pulled off the old one it was as clean and rustfree as the day we installed it. It costs about $3 a bottle and they have it at Autozone.
