Tolerance specs in the engine change as things get broken in and worn down..

Synthetic oil has more "penetrating" power so it will seep into smaller spaces where conventional oil wont. This is why you should not use synthetic oil in older cars.. A lighter oil like a 5w30 will be thinner than a 15w50. Thinner oils will cook off quicker.

Its pretty much a trial and error, which oil you should use. But its all about the same.

Some do...

My 1905 Oldsmobile has no crankcase.

Oil is put into a cup and it "Drips" on the rod with the excess dripping below.

Some old cars had very large oil tanks because of the oil consumed for every mile driven.

You would not have a engine main seal leak as a result of a tranny flush. The two are not connected.

Check the color of the "oil." If it's red, that's transmission fluid.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but here's how I advise people...

It's all a question of what you can live with, and what you want to do.

If you don't mind having an oil spot on your driveway and/or in your garage, a small oil leak is no big deal. If you're losing a quart of oil between oil changes (every 3000-4000 miles) it's no big deal.

You can buy a heckuva lot of oil, at $5 per quart, for the cost of replacing (for instance) a main seal.

On the other hand, if you're going through a quart of oil every 25-50 miles, you've got a major leak that is almost certainly going to leave you stranded somewhere, with a ruined engine.

Never had problems with my Accords but Volvo leaked and GM tended to after a certain period. BTW, I don't think 8 years is old for a car as well. :-)

If you drive 10 miles every two weeks I'd consider that excessive. If you drive 5000 miles every two weeks I'd say you're doing alright.

I have a 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville (with a 455), still does not leak a drop of oil (and yes it has oil in it, LOL).

Changing your oil on a regular basis is key to keeping an engine running at optimum efficiency. In addition keeping oil levels within tolerance is critical also.
inferior gasked material used in older cars made them prone to leaking.
Some would either flatten or thin out. Others would become brittle and crack
Oil to your car is like Blood is to us. It is key to it's primary function, without it a engine cannot operate.

My 2000 Lexus GS blew a head gasket without warning. The head gasket was replaced, but the work produced a bad oil leak. The car burns oil and the back of my car is oily after I drive it a bit, as if oil is coming through the exhaust. I think the cost to fix is worth more than the car is worth, so I'm shopping around.
