My sister-in-law is considering buying a new car. She's narrowed down her choices to those three (Fit, Yaris, Corolla).

Has to have an automatic (or CVT) transmission. She's not interested in super performance, leather seats, or other high-end toys. Wants good, reliable, economical transportation.

Have any of you done comparisons between any two of them? Or tried any particular one?

Do you have any particular good (or bad) things to say about them? What would you recommend?

The Fit and the Yaris are somewhat smaller than the Corolla on the exterior, but have fairly decent interior space utilization. Trunk space is bigger in the Corolla though. All of them you can fold down the rear seats for extra cargo utilization.

Due to the Corolla having a longer wheelbase, it's likely to be more comfortable on longer rides than the Fit or Yaris.

All of them have good records for reliability.

I'd say, if you live in a city like San Francisco with really tight parking spaces, the Fit or Yaris may have a slight edge due to its smaller exterior length. However, the Corolla isn't that much of a bigger and will fit easily into compact car spaces.

I'd say if you drive longer distances, the Corolla would be more comfortable over the long run and has a bit more interior space, it's less clastrophobic.

We used to have corolla. Fantastic car! Never had any problem with it and put 150K on it. Huge trunk. Other two cars are smaller so if you once in a while have more passengers I think corolla will be better.

They're all going to be fine, but personally I would go with the Corolla. In the long run, it will have a much better resale value.

The 4 speed slushbox in a Corolla is ancient compared to the 6 and 7 speeds of its competitors.

You want 6 or 7 gears on a small car like a Corolla? It's not a race car Corolla is the best choice out of the ones you mentioned.

Doubt it. The Fit has comparable resale value, like most Hondas.

The Yaris is the clear loser in this comparison. It is crude and unpleasant. It is frugal and reliable though.

The Fit is versatile and surprisingly roomy. The Fit has been one of Consumer Reports top rated cars since it was introduced. The Corolla is a safe choice, but it always finishes behind the Civic, Mazda3, and VW Golf.

The extra gears are there to squeeze out the best fuel economy out of a small engine. Look at hyundai's 6 speed Elantra or the double clutch 6 speed box in a Ford focus. These cars are both quicker and more fuel efficient than the Corolla. The days of Corolla/Civic dominance in the small car market are history. The Corolla especially is ancient compared to its main competitors, not just in the gearbox. It also lacks direct injection and the interior quality is looks like a throw back to the early 90s. If you really must have a Corolla, wait for the 2014 redesign. It should be a lot more competitive.

Will the 2014 redesign of the Corolla include a 5- or 6-speed automatic? And/or, a CVT transmission?
