I have a 97 corolla, i think the stock wipers are 19 inches on the drivers side, and 18 inches on the passenger side. I just replaced them with a 26 inch wiper on the drivers side, and a 19 on the passenger side. So far, I love it, it wipes the whole windshield, and both wipers have millimeters to spare before they touch each other, my view is perfect.

Simple question, does this work the windshield motor more? or are windshield wiper motors all universal to a point where and size doesnt matter? I dont want to enjoy the viewing surface then have the motor prematurely die.

No, a longer blade will not hurt the wiper motor.

This is probably okay, but...for those who may recall the "double wipers" that were popular about 10 years ago, those hokey things did lead to many a burned-out wiper motor.

Yes, a double wiper will clear the glass more effectively, but it also puts twice the drag on the wiper motor and linkage, hence the resulting problems. Adding a few inches to your wipers will not add anywhere near as much drag as those double wipers, but...an aged motor just might be pushed over the edge by any additional drag.

I don't think that there is any way to accurately predict the outcome, but I am leaning toward...not a problem.

It would depend on how narrow the tolerance is in the wiper motor and function design. But my first guess would be that Toyota only makes one or two wiper motors for all their vehicles (differing only in terms of physical shape to fit the housing location and linkage configuration), and the same motor is installed in cars that use all different sizes of wiper blades. It might be even more likely that the larger blades will place excessive stress on the motor's mounting hardware, causing it to break loose of its moorings over many years.

At highway speeds, there is a huge amount of drag on the wiper making their downward sweep, and the increment could be significant going to a larger blade windward surface area. However, your car is probably equipped with a wiper motor that is more than adequate to deal with the increased drag. Turn on your wipers when parked, and go out and try to stop the blades, you'll see that the motor is surprisingly powerful.

I strongly agree with the above, 7 inches, on a curved glass. not enough to worry bout. specially since yes, that motor is the one they use in the trucks and suvs too. guessing, but the horsepower should be way strong enough to maintain your wipers for many years.

I am surprised that much more blade fits on the window!

I wouldn't worry about the wiper motor. It should be ok.

I usually replace the stock wiper sizes on my Toyota with shorter lengths from 24/18 to 18/13 reason being over the life of the car that wiper motor is going to be working a lot less to push the shorter wipers over the glass,if it was just rain i probably wouldnt worry that much but we have long winters and that wiper motor can be asked to push a lot of snow accumulation over the course of the winter, visibility is not compromised..

I too am surprised.

I've got an old vintage Volvo with 16" wiper blades. I figured something bigger should fit, but the end of the blade already comes to within an inch of the top of the windshield.

I might worry about the link the arm makes to the motor housing. It may strip it over time due to the increased force needed to move a blade across a dry window. Worst case scenerio is that you may have to replace the arm as the motor will spin but the arm won't lift.
