Will a car cellphone charger serve the same purpose that a wall charger does (to give a full charge) or is the purpose of a car charger just to keep the existing charge already on the phone (and nothing more) or to simply make the phone operable to the user?

I ask because when i last used the car charger in the car(this was like 6 years ago on a long trip) i don't think I ever got a message on the phone that said charging was complete even after the phone was plugged in to the cigarette lighter and running for hours in the off mode. In fact I don't think it charged very much at all

since then i do have a new phone

how does this work?

My car charger will actually charge the phone while plugged in. I have an iPhone 4s.

If the cigarette lighter outlet has power to it, your car charger will fully charge your iPhone.

Some cars' outlets cut power when the engine is off. My car's outlet continues to have power when off while my wife's car doesn't. Check your charger to see if it has a power indicator light. If it does, see if the light remains on when the engine is turned off. Sometimes the problem is the plug is t in the socket properly. If it's off when the engine is off, you could get a solar charger.

I've got a Droid StupidPhone® with Verizon service and it, like yours, charges like crap unless it's plugged into an AC outlet. I cannot get a full charge on a car charger nor a USB port plugged into the back of a computer laptop.

My wife and my father-in-law... who installs phone systems and is an IT whiz... both mentioned this issue and I've noticed the same.

One of my phones is annoying as it will now only get a full charge in the car, not on the AC charger. So, yes, the car does charge the battery fully, otherwise I'd be driven insane by the five minutes of capacity that charging overnight seems to allow on the AC charger.

As I understand it, the power from your household wall receptacle and your car cigar lighter both get transformed by the respective chargers into exactly the same energy output, and the phone receiving it has no way of detecting where the energy originally comes from. So the phone reacts exactly the same to either of them.
